Every Sunday, a group of Master swimmers swim from Mauna Kai beach to Hapuna Beach a distance of about 1 mile +. On 12-13-09 there was a group of 4. The waves were light in the ocean but there was a fair amount of swell. It took about 30 min. to make it to Hapuna beach. It's about a 1 mile swim - one way. While we were talking at Haupuna beach - we were standing in waist deep water and saw some 10 foot high waves coming in.

This was a surprise but fun diving through the waves. While under water there were a lot of different currents, cloudy water, and a bit of a wait while the waves passed over us. There were about 5 waves that we dived through.

Once back to Mauna Kai beach - Jim and I swan in butterfly. I called it a bit close to the point on the way back and since the waves were breaking a bit high I needed to quickly change direction and swim out to the ocean to avoid being pushed up to the lava. While swimming around the lava point I was surprised at how high the waves were breaking over the point.

Once back to shore and showering I went back to the car and got the camera and took a walk to Hapuna beach and back, taking these portraits.
